When we arrived I could almost smell the wood of the guitars and hear the world changing rock and roll I was going to create.

When I woke up on September 29th 1985 I didn't know how the day was going to unfold, but I knew it would be special. It was my birthday. I was fourteen. All I dreamt about for the last couple years was being a rock star. I wanted an electric guitar and I wanted to be a guitar player like my heroes, Jimi Hendrix, Jerry Garcia, Jimmy Page, etc. My journey started with my mother driving me to Sam Ash Music in New Jersey. When we arrived I could almost smell the wood of the guitars and hear the world changing rock and roll I was going to create. Through the door my jaw dropped as I was met with the sight of hundreds of beautiful necks and bodies. I couldn't predict the future, but I knew mine was about to start. My skills at this point were limited, I was more overcome by their beauty than their sound. As I held each one gently on my lap, I caressed their necks and felt the weight of their bodies and new my life had just changed forever. I played the chords I knew on each of these beauties (within my mom's price range!) and after many hours, settled on the one that spoke to me the loudest. The one that I knew would be with me through thick and thin, success and failure. She would always let me speak through her, no matter what I had to say. Back through that same door, I had a gift for life.
